1 or 2 day SILK WORKSHOPS BASED AROUND SILK AND TEXTILES
The Silk Workshops are divided into half and one or two day modules and can be combined to make the perfect programme for the interests of your group. Depending on the workshop, a silk kit, containing all the silks we will be using during the course is often provided for each member.
In addition to the Guild workshops at your venue, there will be new small house-based workshops in 2013-14 and they can be at Devonport or your venue if you wish. If you can offer house-space for up to 12 people, then the course is FREE for the hostess. Please contact email@example.com to discuss arrangements.
Taking an old machine knitted jersey or cardigan we decide how we are going to remodel it, by cutting, stitching, embroidering and knitting it to embellish and turn it into a wonderful piece of wearable art. 1-2 day workshops.
This is a great workshop to explore lots of different textures and give your work a new slant and impact. Knit, crochet, knot, slash, shred, there is no end to the fun ways of making wonky threads. You can sew, layer, darn, wrap, reknit or twist them into something fresh and new. We will identify, handle and use lots of different silks and discuss elements of design and new ways to incorporate these silks and threads into your knitting, felting, stitching and weaving, 1-2 days.
Making an Embroidered Silk Jewelry Roll or Hussif
Using a variety of different silk fabrics, we identify the different silks and experiment with cutting, sewing, patching and embroidering them to make a delightful, lined and finished jewelry roll or hussif. 2 days.
Knitted Silk Evening Purse
Taking luscious knitting weight silk yarn and enhancing it with a variety of textured silk yarns, we knit then line an evening purse. Pure white is exquisite, but adding coloured yarns expands the whole project. 2 days.
Making Silk Yarns without ever learning to spin
This workshop is for weavers, embroiderers, braid and felt makers, quilters and patchworkers, and all those people who would love to make and use lots of different types of silk yarn, but who have no intention of learning to spin. We use different silk fibres and hand manipulate them into silk yarns to embellish and enhance your own work, half a day.
Spinning Fine Silk
A silk workshop for reasonably experienced spinners, to learn the different techniques to spin silk into fine even thread for weaving, braid-making, lace, etc. half to one day
Spinning High Loft Silk for Knitting
Here we concentrate on learning the different spinning techniques for producing a range of thicker silk threads suitable for knitting, half to one day
Spinning Fancy Textured Silk Yarns
Here we explore a whole range of silk types, from the best A1 quality to the roughest noil, hardly better than floor-sweepings. We make lots of fancy yarns of different weights, textures and styles for different purposes. One to two days
Designing and Knitting Silk Garments
This is a silk workshop for knitting with handspun or commercial silk yarn. Silk handles very differently from wool so we cover designing, pattern-making, tension, measurements, working with colour and texture and problem solving. We explore the special knitting techniques that give an imaginative design the perfect fit and professional finish. one or two days
Using a whole variety of different white silk fabrics, we hand manipulate and embroider them, exploring the touch and texture of the different silks and suitable ways of using them to make a small art piece. One or two days
It is my greatest joy to share my love of silk so please let me know how I can best fit in with your programme.
